Values and Philosophy
Our development (personal, professional, relational) depends upon the continual management of and response to a changing environment. To a very large degree, we are a product of all that we have experienced.
Much of life can be characterized as “planful serendipity,” suggesting that we plan as best we can, then cope as best we can with what “reality” presents us. As circumstances change, the choices available to us also change. Compromise and re-calibration are constantly required.
Therapeutic Technique and Methodology
My approach to counseling or therapy is best described as fundamentally integrative or eclectic, suggesting that what works is more important than what you call it.
Of the more than two hundred acknowledged theories of psychotherapy that exist, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) seems to have the most to offer in terms of practical application for the majority of adults. The objectives of CBT are to identify irrational or maladaptive thoughts, assumptions, beliefs and behaviors that are related to debilitating emotions, and to identify how they are dysfunctional, inaccurate, or simply not helpful.
